This benchmark role is no coincidence. For more than 25 years, Febelauto, together with its members, accredited centres, processing and recycling partners, has been building an efficient and reliable system for the collection and recycling of end-of-life vehicles.
Belgium is one of the European leaders in vehicle recycling. No less than 98% of the weight of an end-of-life vehicle is put to good use in Belgium. 23% is reused as second-hand car parts and 71% is recycled to recover valuable raw materials.
These impressive figures are thanks to the close-knit network of approved collection and recycling centres. Vehicles can be disposed of correctly and safely throughout the country, with respect for people and the environment. Thanks to the certificate of destruction, the administrative process is simple and legally watertight, which is also important for reporting and traceability.
In addition, Febelauto invests heavily in innovation and digitisation. Tools such as the ELV platform for tracking end-of-life vehicles and batteries make the entire chain more transparent and efficient. This allows recycling flows to be accurately monitored and continuously optimised. Febelauto acts as a one-stop shop for importers to centrally organise their various producer responsibilities for vehicles and vehicle-related waste streams.
Belgium is also playing a pioneering role in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles. In collaboration with its members, Febelauto has developed a safe and structured system for the collection, dismantling and processing of batteries from electrified vehicles. The focus is on maximising reuse, second life and high-quality recycling of critical raw materials.
Finally, Febelauto actively promotes the circular economy, for example by repurposing parts and materials and by sharing knowledge with other sectors, governments and European partners. In this way, the Belgian model not only contributes to sustainable mobility, but also serves as a source of inspiration for other countries.
Together, the members of Round and Febelauto are making Belgium a true European benchmark in efficient and future-oriented recycling.
